My Story

Hi, I’m Ryan. I am a fully qualified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach working in Maidstone, Medway and the surrounding areas.

I work with clients from beginner to advanced level in their training, and also patients with disabilities (including some with severe brain injuries). No matter what your current condition or future goal, I will be able to help you progress in a safe and enjoyable way.
I am passionate about the links between our physical and mental health, and believe that lifting spirits is just as important as lifting weights!

I’m a Personal Trainer with a difference; when it comes to dealing with physical and mental health problems I have literally been there, done it and got the XXL t-shirt, having previously reversed my own obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety and depression, all through sustainable and enjoyable exercise and nutrition.

As I battled with my own health and weight, I tried all the gimmicks and games that are out there- there’s not many fad diets I haven’t been on myself. Keto, VLCD, Intermittent Fasting, Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Dukan, sugar free, meal replacement shakes, low fat, low carb… you name it; I have tested it. Sure, I lost some weight initially with some of these, but over time all the weight crept back on (and sometimes a bit extra that wasn’t there in the first place, too!).

Sound familiar? That’s because absolutely none of these fad diets are sustainable long term.

My personal experience means I have a real understanding of, and genuine empathy for the challenges faced by my clients in their everyday lives. I am privileged to help people from all walks of life, to become better versions of themselves.

I have yo-yo dieted most of my life, from a child through my teenage years and into my early forties. There are no other personal trainers in Maidstone who have been over twenty stones in weight, all the way down to under eleven stone, and then put all the weight back on again. I repeated this cycle many times before I learned the right way of doing things.

I am unique in that I understand not only the physical health problems that come with huge swings in body weight, but also the crippling anxiety and mental health issues too. I have some important qualification certificates but the thing that really makes the difference in terms of helping my clients achieve their goals is my life experience- it’s priceless. I remember once trying a home workout on YouTube created by a famous exercise celebrity that we all know from the tv. His session was for ‘ultimate beginners’ and I was alone in my house- what could possibly go wrong? Well, I lasted less than two minutes of this 30-minute session. It made me feel terrible about myself- a complete failure- I couldn’t even complete a workout designed for complete beginners- I may as well give up on myself!

Luckily, I had time to reflect and realise that surely I couldn’t be alone in feeling like this. That was a key point in me retraining to become a PT and becoming a trainer who is a bit more ‘normal’ and who hasn’t always been super fit. I am just a regular, relatable guy and this is what most of my clients have been looking for.
Listen, I’m going to share a secret with you. At my biggest, I was quite a lot bigger than I am in those pictures. But guess what? I was camera shy and avoided having my photos taken at all costs! Sound familiar?

Now I’m a healthy weight, one of my biggest regrets is not having some photos of me at my largest to compare and look back on. Now I know the secret to maintaining my weight without being on a diet, I’ll thankfully never put the weight back on, but I do wish I had taken the real before photos!

For this reason, I encourage all my clients to take private pictures of themselves to look back on in the future.
There’s no doubt some of these methods have some quick initial results. We then see a lot of transformation photos based on weight loss in the first few weeks of one of these plans. But how many times do we see true transformations that have lasted for months?

How many client testimonials do we see saying how someone loves starving themselves or living on shakes instead of enjoying a nice meal, and not cutting out any of their favourite foods? That’s because they don’t! None of these plans work in the long run because they are all unhealthy in one way or another; they are all restrictive, most of them demonise different foods and this can make us have a bad relationship with food and even lead to eating disorders.
